In a retrospective cohort study which included all adult patients (≥16 years) between January 1999 and December 2013 in a 2,700-bed tertiary care hospital, all the patients in whom PCR of the CSF for HSV was positive were identified. HSV-2 in the CSF was determined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and patients were diagnosed as encephalitis or meningitis according to predefined clinical criteria by retrospective data information from consecutive clinical journals. Mortality in 6- and 12-week old infected mice was about 20%. Two methods were used to demonstrate viral reactivation: (i) recovery of infectious herpes simplex virus in ganglion homogenates and (ii) acceleration of virus expression in ganglion explants in culture.
