The amino acid, lysine, helps produce energy. Arginine is a conditionally essential amino acid involved in wound healing, immune system function and hormone secretion. In this process, the γ134.5 protein recruits cellular protein phosphatase 1 (PP1) to form a high-molecular-weight complex that dephosphorylates eIF-2α. Although gE is well conserved among alphaherpesviruses, the amino terminus of VZV gE is unique. The lesions caused by this infection are often painful, burning, or pruritic, and tend to recur in most patients. This unique vertex is also believed to comprise the site with which a molecular motor, termed the terminase, associates during the DNA packaging reaction. Earlier studies have shown that modified peptides based on lactoferricins reduce HSV-1 and HSV-2 infection, and structure–activity studies indicate that the anti-viral activity correlates with the binding affinity for heparan sulphate and chondroitin sulphate.
So far, only limited information is available on their functions, which include complex formation with the (p)UL37 homologs via an N-terminal domain and a deubiquitinating activity in the extreme N terminus.
